The Gold Standard

The Gold Standard is an exhibition of artwork from artists based in Ireland that plays on ideas of value through a diverse set of practices and perspectives.

Weight and measurement may be ranked amoung the necessaries of life and of society. The knowledge of them, as established in use, is amoung the first elements of education, and is often learned by those who learn nothing else, not even to read or write. So riveted are these systems of equivalence in memory, so intuitive is their employment in everyday tasks, that that which remains arbitrary in them is often overlooked. Furthermore, the ‘rules of thumb’ we have developed to measure the physical world have come to inform our understanding of value in life’s more unquantifiable spheres – art and ethics.

The Gold Standard will open at 6pm at the Freezer and continue until Thursday 23rd April.
